Shelter Needed At busy Bus Stop In Carrigaline Writes Leo McMahon
A shelter at one of the busiest bus stops in South Cork, the bridge at Carrigaline, was requested by Cllr Seamus McGrath (FF) at the monthly meeting of Cork County Council’s Carrigaline-Ballincollig Municipal District. In attendance was Bus Eireann regional manager Mr. Martin Walsh who replied: ‘It’s something I’d like to see in place too and it has been requested numerous times. I believe it’s the structure of the bridge that won’t allow it to be put in place. It would involve digging up the footpath and planting a concrete base to put the shelter on and there was concern that the bridge structure could be undermined. Other locations along Main Street have been looked at but none are suitable, because all would be directly in front of business premises.’ Mr. Walsh added that the company JC Decaux now has the contract for looking after bus shelters with advertising and undertook to mention it to them. ‘When I get stuck in traffic, I often see a large number of people waiting for the bus on the bridge who are very exposed because there is no shelter. It’s the busiest bus stop heading into the city from the area. Shelters are needed to encourage greater use of public transport,’ said Cllr McGrath. ‘I appreciate the engineering difficulty but perhaps an overhang shelter or one on the road itself which would take up a parking space be looked at. We need to bite the bullet on this and look at options.’
Ballygarvan Bus In reply to Cllr McGrath, Mr. Walsh said Bus Eireann received a couple of representations for a Cork-Ballygarvan bus service. ‘We will work to try to put something in, possibly as an adjusted Airport/Kinsale bus service but this is subject to National Transport Authority (NTA) funding and approval. Mr. McGrath said he was seeking this for some time. There was no service at present for a village with a sizeable population. Cllr McGrath said he would like to see the bus service to Waterpark, Carrigaline restored. Mr. Walsh replied that the request would be considered it as part of 220X service (Ovens to Fountainstown) introduced last year and undertook to bring it to the attention of the NTA.
