The Passage GAA Club at Maulbawn was packed to capacity for the fundraising Wax-a-thon with proceeds on the night going towards local girl Sophie Holbrook and the ‘Fundraising for Sophie’ fund. Leaving Certificate school friends from St Peter’s Community School and colleagues of Sophie had their legs and chests waxed during the course of the night with one of the biggest cheers of the night going towards local Parish Priest Fr Con who also had his legs waxed. The waxing was done by Lisa and Boga of Foxys Hair and Beauty, Passage West who worked tirelessly, such was the demand from local youngsters willing to have their legs waxed and even getting their friends to rip off patches and inflict some pain on them, all for a good cause. However, Fr Con was not finished, as he then proceeded to have his head shaved by local Turkish Barber Arif Akkaya much to the amusement of all. The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for local character Eddie Fitz who not only had his long hair and beard completely shaved off, but was transformed completely with a complete new set of clothes courtesy of Simply Suits. Event MC Frances McEveney was coerced into having his head of hair shaved, while Luke O’Sullivan willingly sat on the barbers stool and had his all of his ginger hair shaved, posing for selfies with many of his classmates. Sophie Holbrook, currently undergoing cancer treatment in Dublin, was present at the wax-a-thon and was grateful for the wonderful support she had received by family, friends and neighbours and the people of Passage West and was blown away by the support on the night. Grateful thanks were given to the event organisers, Kelly McEveney, Emma Harrington and Orla Higgins; Turkish barber Arif Akkaya; Lisa and Boga of Foxys Hair and Beauty; DJ Shane; Simply Suits as well as the large numbers of willing volunteers who had their legs and heads shaved on the night. Footnote – many of those who had their legs waxed that evening were part of the Passage U21 team who went onto defeat Nemo Rangers in the divisional football semi final the following day.
