Over 1000 Athletes Ready For Crosshaven Road Race 2020

The annual Crosshaven Road Race will take place on Sunday 8th March 2020 to raise funds for Scoil Bhríde, Crosshaven.

This will be the event’s 7th year and its 3rd year having two courses.

There is a choice between two events, a 5km race and a 10km race for the adults. Both races have a start time of 11:30am. The 5km/10km courses are some of the most picturesque in Ireland with runners having the opportunity to complete their first race or personal best due to the route being #flatandfurious. Entry is now full for these races, with a waiting list in place.

The event is Athletics Ireland Approved. First prize in both male and female events is €150.

This year’s new addition is the start of a three-year plan to make the race more environmentally friendly, in line with the village being part of the “One Green Village” programme. With this in mind, organisers are aiming this year to make the event, “plastic free”.

The different categories for the children's races include a 1km race for children from junior infants to first class and 2km race for children from second class to 6th class, with all children who participate receiving a medal and t-shirt. The proceeds of the Children’s Race will go to the Crosshaven RNLI Lifeboat Station.

Crosshaven Road Race continue their media partnership with 96FM Media Partner this year as well as continuing their strong relationship with Lynch’s Centra Crosshaven who continue to be their main sponsor.

Both the 5km and 10km races start outside Centra in the Village Square, athletes pass around the roundabout and out through the village on to the Carrigaline Road. Athletes continue on this road, passing the RNLI Lifeboat Station as well as the famous Royal Cork Yacht Club for a little under 2.5km, until they reach the first turning point for the 5km. The turning point for the 10Km race is near to O’Leary’s Cross. Both races turn back onto themselves allowing the athletes to have a straight run back to the finish line in the village.

Registration Athletes may commence collecting their race numbers at 9:30am in the Crosshaven Community Centre and last collection will be taken at 11:15am. There will also be a bag-drop facility for athletes in the hall.

Parking

Crosshaven Road Race organisers are in a privileged position to offer ample parking facilities to athletes who take part. Stewards will be on duty as you approach the village to direct patrons to our various designated sites. All sites are a short distance from the start line.

Residents and local sports clubs and organisations are asked to take note of the event and road closures.

The Race

The race will be officially timed by spotstiming.ie. A large clock will be on display at the Start/Finish line. Tea/coffee/water and sandwiches will be available afterwards to all athletes in the Crosshaven Community Centre.

Supporters

For anyone who is not taking part in the race, there is still plenty to do if you wish to attend. Crosshaven is a fantastic backdrop for such an event and the natural layout of the village lends itself to creating a unique and enjoyable atmosphere. A vantage point near the village square guarantees that you will see all the athletes depart and return. There will be a DJ at the Start/Finish line to help lift the atmosphere and create excitement for the athletes.

The event couldn't take place without the continued support of the Irish Coast Guard, Crosshaven Fire Service and the Carrigaline Order of Malta.
