The refurbishments included an upgrade and extension of the existing clubhouse, which was originally built in 1995, in an effort to revitalise the club, increase membership and facilitate more inclusions for members with intellectual or physical disabilities.

Improvements also included external works to three of their outdoor courts, including the widening of court gates, disability changing areas and the installation of viewing platforms, which are all wheelchair accessible.

They hope to work closely with Tennis Ireland to host initiatives centered on making tennis more accessible to all players, including players with disabilities.

Ghyslaine Hegarty said: “Tennis is quite a social game and even in the last few months our membership has increased a lot.

“We’re quite unique in Cork because we are a small club with these facilities. All players will benefit from these refurbishments.”

The opening of the club was well attended, despite the rainy weather, with attendees including An Tánaiste Micheál Martin, former minister Simon Coveney, MEP Michael McGrath, Cllr Séamus McGrath, Cllr Jack White, Cllr Audrey Buckley members of Munster Tennis, and members from the wider community, including school principals, business owners and local residents.

In regards to support received from the wider community, Ghyslaine Hegarty thanked “all attendees, Simon Covenery for his continued support, and the army of volunteers behind the scenes and the fundraising committee for their big efforts.”
