European Taekwondo Medals for Passage West Teenager

The Passage West Taekwondo Club were celebrating last week when one of their students won two Medals for Ireland at the European Taekwondo Championships.

16-Year-old Joey Shaw from Passage West was selected to represent Team Ireland at the 36th Senior and 27th Junior AETF European Taekwondo Championships held in Poreč, Croatia last week where he stepped up to international elite level for the first time winning two Silver Medals.

Joey competed in three separate categories and on Thursday April 28th, Joey kicked of his campaign in the Junior Male Team Patterns section with his teammates Cian Barrett, Cork, Finn Martin, Dublin, Dave Larkin, Clare, and Odin McNulty, Clare. The lads put in countless hours of training which paid off, with them beating Spain 5-0 in the Q-Final, Romania 4-1 in the S-Final before narrowly losing out to Scotland in the Final to claim a European Silver Medal.

On Friday April 29th Joey competed in the Individual Male Junior Sparring -68kg category, beating his Norwegian opponent 4-0 after extra time before narrowly losing out to his Scottish opponent for a place in the Q-Final.

This disappointment was short-lived as Joey was selected on the Saturday to compete as part of the Male Junior Sparring team on Sunday May 1st, fighting in every match. Joey, together with teammates Finn Martin, Shane Alison, Adam Power, Sam Keogh and Dannan Fox battled hard with wins over Romania and Germany, making it through to the final and taking silver against Ukraine. This was a massive achievement for Joey for his first-time representing Ireland at this level with much more to come from this talented teenager.

Joey would like to thank his Passage West Club Instructor Master Paul Delea for the time and support he has given him. Master Mark Buckley Cork ITA for the extra training and all the Team Ireland Coaches and Management.
