Carrigaline U14 Ladies Win County Final

U14B County Final – Carrigaline v Bride Rovers.

Writes Mark O’Riordan (Coach).

Just after 5pm on September 1st, this great group of U14 players set out on their last leg for County glory. Each girl gave it their all and no one was found wanting. After a great first half we were 9 points up with Aofie H, Aoife O’N., Rebecca M. and Heidi providing goals.

Bride Rovers are a great team and we knew they would come back at us and to their credit they did. Aoife O’N., Julie and Rebecca M. carried a massive amount of ball to get the pressure off us in the second half and special mention to Rebecca M. for her second goal into the top corner.

Fodla played on during the second half while carrying an injury showing how much of warrior she is. Our goal keeper Eimear and full back line were brilliant with Rebecca S. and Alina excelling while Aoibhinn, Roisin, Ellen, Amy and Hannah took the fight to the opposition at all times during the game. Maria and Aoife H. were great sources of ball retention in the second half and Niamh did brilliantly for the fourth goal.

The opposition had their homework done and put two girls on Heidi but she constantly moved wide during the game to create space for other girls, she also scored a great “soccer” goal in the first half.

It was nip and tuck in the last quarter with Bride Rovers getting to within 3 points but when Heidi pointed a free to make the difference 4, that was the boost the girls needed and it stayed like that until the final whistle. Wild celebrations occurred which is no more than these girls deserved after losing the County B final two years ago.

The cheer when captain Amy lifted the cup could be heard in the next parish. The backs were absolutely awesome over the County games, only conceding 4 goals in all games. On the other hand the forwards scored 26 goals and can’t be ignored.

The U14 management would like to thank the Carrigaline Ladies Football Committee for their help during the year. We would also like to thank the parents; your support is greatly appreciated.

Personally I would like to thank the rest of the selectors, Aoife Kearney’s knowledge of the game is second to none and she gives her all for the girls, Lorraine Goggin came in as ladies rep during the year and is great with the girls, Kelvin O Sullivan’s experience is vital to the girls development and also helping to keep me calm at the sideline, Ed Burke has given the girls that last bit they needed to get across the line, At times during the year I would say Ed was thinking, ‘what have I let myself in for?’ as the girls were losing more than they were winning, Ger Horgan is a great club man for both Football and Camogie so a really special thanks to Ger for all the work he has put in.

We would also like to thank the support from club members, when I looked around after the game there were coaches and players from under 8, 10, 12, 16, minor and Junior at the game, their support is much appreciated. Finally, we would like to thank the girls, without you we don’t have a team, you are a credit to yourselves, your parents, your coaches and your club. Well done to all, we are so proud.

Final Score Carrigaline 6-5, Bride Rovers 2-13. Carrig Abu!
