Writes Ciaran Dineen
Carrigaline’s Aaron Drinan has been called up for duty with the Irish football U21 team in what is Stephen Kenny’s first competitive game as Manager. The opening fixture of the U21 UEFA European Championships qualifying campaign begins on the 24th March, with Ireland and Drinan facing off against Luxembourg.
The clash will take place in Shamrock Rovers’ Tallaght Stadium in Dublin, and Aaron is very much looking forward to meeting up with the squad. “I’m absolutely buzzing to be called into the U21 team. It was something I was aiming to get into and I’m glad I’ve achieved that”. Stephen Kenny has been one of the greatest coaches the League of Ireland has ever seen, and his incredible success with Dundalk over the past five years earned him a place in the Ireland setup.
Kenny takes charge of the U21s from now until July 2020, where he will then take over as Manager of the Irish Senior team. Drinan is also chomping at the bit to be part of a team managed by Kenny. Speaking exclusively to The Carrigdhoun “I’m really looking forward to being trained by Stephen Kenny. He’s done so well with Dundalk over the years and it’s something I’m really looking forward to.”
Aaron is currently on-loan with Waterford FC until July, from his parent club Ipswich. The striker was a substitute in Waterford’s recent league victory over his former club Cork City, and has featured heavily for the Déise outfit so far this season. Last weekend Aaron scored his first two goals for Waterford this season, earning a 2-0 win over St Patricks Athletic, and claiming the Man of the Match award in the process.
Congratulations to Aaron from everyone at The Carrigdhoun. COYBIG!
